Mementos from 1907 – The New Church

The First Baptist Church of Waco began worship in the new church on the corner of 5th and Webster in 1907. The beautiful Neo-Byzantine sanctuary was outfitted with elegant oaken pews. By 1958, the pews were in need of refinishing. At that time, the hymnal racks, the communion cup holders and the pencil and envelope holders were replaced. The original pieces were packed into boxes and languished in the church basement and closets until the refurbishing project of 2017 caused church members to examine the storage areas. When the 1907 racks and holders were discovered, much thought was given to whether they should be retained and, if so, how that should be done. Some were taken by members as mementos, but boxes and boxes remained. Finally, Kristi and Mike Horton of Lockhart, Texas, heard about them and set about designing ways to display them. Here are the products of their work.

Modestly priced, 15% of all sales stay with FBC Waco Missions Fund. The balance is remitted to the Hortons to cover their expenses. Checks may be made payable to First Baptist Church, Waco with the notation “memento.”
